On this eve of July 4, 2005, we celebrate the victory over tyranny won by our forefathers in 1776. We celebrate in freedom, but do we really know what freedom is and what it really means to be free?
Today we argue over all kinds of freedoms: the freedom of speech, the right to carry guns, to make and change laws, to own or not own property. How far have we truly come from the small army of 1776 who sat at Valley Forge fighting for the same freedoms. We seem to have come full circle, yet have learned so little.
The freedom I possess does not come from laws, or people, or anything for that matter that the world has to offer. It is the freedom that can only be gained from the Lord my God and His son, Jesus.
"For God so loved the world, He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him." (John 3:16-17)
It is only through the blood of Jesus that I or any of us have any freedom at all and it is only through the grace of God that I or any of us are even alive and breathing today. Each breath we take is a divine gift from our almighty creator – one we often take for granted.
We enjoy His gracious blessings when we walk in divine order with Him – according to His Word. God and His Word are one – they cannot be separated or changed. The Bible is the living Word of God and the truth!
As Americans who founded our country on sound Biblical principles, we have continually and consistently found ways to distort, pervert, and deceive ourselves into a false sense of freedom. We have taken God's Word and diluted and distorted it, creating a false sense of security. A security based on our own manmade monuments instead of our loving Father. His creation is now worshipping the created rather than the Creator, who is longing for us to return.
God forgive us for what we have allowed to happen.
"If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and heal their land." (2Chronicles 7:14)
